WE NEED TO TALK

- Lessons from a Bad Collaborative Case -

“We need to talk”: For most of us, those four little words represent a request (or demand) for a dreaded, discussion. For our clients, the words often foreshadow «the end». As Collaborative Professionals, we strive to support our clients‘ most difficult conversations, but is it time we had our own «little talk»? Despite its promise, Collaborative Practice is still not the first choice for families. We promote CP as “best for families”, yet many of us have had bad experiences on cases, where we did not deliver on the promise of client-centred and meaningful engagement Can we learn from our “failure to launch” and fulfill our ethical duty to deliver on what we promise in CP? Can we talk about the threats in the way of expanding CP? This workshop invites you to join a refreshing and honest conversation about the ethical and practical challenges we face in Collaborative Practice.

  • What are we promising when we invite families into a collaborative process?
  • Are we delivering on what we promise? How do we know?
  • What assumptions are we making about clients’ values and motivations?
  • How can we ensure informed consent to a process that asks so much?
  • How can we learn what clients need – deeply and efficiently?
  • What ethical challenges arise from our certainty that this process is “best”?
  • How can we do better work by engaging more deeply with the client experience to create a bespoke process and outcome that meets each family’s unique needs?

Join Jacinta Gallant for an honest examination of one of her “bad collaborative cases” and what she learned from it. Together we will ask tough questions about us – and engage in an exploration of the foundation of our ethical duty in CP: Ensuring clients are truly heard and understood so they can make the best decisions for their future.
